Which background to choose

For a marketplace, our white background tool starts on white with the marketplace sizes ready, and explains which one wants white and which wants grey.
Photos it handles well, and where it struggles
We tested it on real saree photos: models in palace courtyards and gardens, and sarees held up flat against a sheet.
- Good: a model in a saree, even in front of a busy palace courtyard or garden, with the hair and the pallu cut cleanly.
- Good: a garment laid flat or held up, with some floor or wall showing around it.
- Weak: see-through net, organza and chiffon. A flying organza dupatta came out solid, with the garden behind it still showing through the cloth.
- Weak: a garment the same colour as the background, such as navy cloth on a dark grey sheet.
- Weak: small gaps, such as between the spokes of a bicycle wheel, can keep bits of the old background.
- Fails: cloth spread to fill the whole frame, especially a wide landscape shot. With no background to see, there is nothing to remove, and the tool tells you so.
Hands holding the saree up count as part of the photo and are kept. Crop them out afterwards, or take the photo on a hanger or a table.

How to remove a background

Choose your photo
A JPEG, PNG or WebP from your phone or computer. It opens in your browser and is not uploaded.

Wait for the cut-out
The first time, the 48 MB model downloads once. Then the background is removed in seconds.

Pick the new background
Transparent, white or light grey. The empty space around the product is trimmed unless you untick it; tick Soften the edge slightly if the outline looks too sharp.

Set a size if you need one
Keep the original size, or pick a marketplace size. The product is centred, with the new background filling the gap.

Compare the before and after, check the size, and tap Download.

Already have a clean photo?
If the background is fine and only the size is wrong, the product image resizer is quicker: it skips the cut-out and goes straight to the marketplace size.

Questions about removing backgrounds
Is this background remover really free?
Yes. There is no login, no credits, no watermark and no limit on the number of photos. The cut-out is made by your own phone or computer, so it costs us nothing to run and there is nothing to charge for.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The first time you use it, your browser downloads the background-removal model (48 MB) from our site and keeps it. After that the photo is cut out on your device, and it is never sent to SareeViz or anyone else.
How do I get a transparent PNG?
Choose Transparent under New background and download. A see-through photo is always saved as PNG, because JPEG cannot store transparency. PNG files are bigger, so if a website asks for a file size limit, pick white or light grey instead.
Can I remove the background and put it on white for Amazon?
Yes. Pick White, and the Amazon size if you want it: 1500 x 2000, with the product centred and a white border filling the gap. Amazon asks for a pure white main photo, and this white is exactly RGB 255, 255, 255.
What does it get wrong?
See-through net, organza and chiffon come out solid, with the garden or wall that was behind them still showing through the cloth, because the tool decides "keep" or "remove" for each spot rather than how see-through the cloth is. A garment the same colour as the wall behind it can lose its edge. Hands holding the cloth are kept, as they are part of the photo.
Why does it take long the first time?
The first photo waits for the 48 MB model to download. It is stored in your browser, so the next photo, and your next visit, start straight away. On a recent laptop a photo then takes a few seconds; an older phone can take much longer.
Will the cut-out lose quality?
No. The model works on a small 512 x 512 copy to find the outline, and that outline is then applied to your full-size photo, so the saree's own pixels are kept. Only photos over 4,096 pixels on the long side are scaled down to that.
