What decides a photo’s file size
Two things: how many pixels it has, and how hard the JPEG is squeezed (its quality). Quality can only take you so far. Halving the width and height cuts the pixels to a quarter, which shrinks the file far more than any quality setting.
Busy prints compress less than plain fabric. A saree with all-over buttis or zari has detail in every corner, so it needs more bytes than a plain georgette at the same size.
What real saree photos came to
We ran 3 real saree photos, each between 2,200 and 3,700 pixels wide, through this compressor. At Myntra’s 1080 x 1440 they came out like this:
| Size limit | At 1080 x 1440 | At full size |
|---|---|---|
| 100 KB | No: 123 to 141 KB even at quality 50 | No; fits at about 550 to 658 px wide |
| 500 KB | Yes, at quality 93 to 94 | No; fits at about 1390 px wide |
| 1 MB | Yes, at quality 95 (513 to 576 KB) | Only the smallest photo; the others needed shrinking |
Your own photo will differ, which is why the tool measures each one instead of guessing.
Pages for the common sizes
Each one starts with that size already picked, and explains what it is good for:
- Compress image to 100 KB, for online forms and quick sharing
- Compress image to 500 KB, a full marketplace photo at high quality
- Compress image to 1 MB, Myntra’s upper limit and most upload boxes
How to compress a photo
- 1
Choose your photo
A JPEG, PNG or WebP. It opens in your browser and is not uploaded.
- 2
Pick the size limit
Choose one from the list, or Custom to type any number in KB or MB.
- 3
Shrink the pixels if asked
If the limit cannot be met at a decent quality, tap the suggested size. It has been checked to fit.
- 4
Download
The table shows the exact bytes and the quality used. Tap Download.
Uploading to a marketplace? The product image resizer sets the pixel size each one asks for and keeps the file under its limit in the same step.
Photo rejected for its background rather than its size? The white background tool puts the product on pure white or light grey, with the same file size limit.
Questions about compressing photos
How do I compress an image to a specific size in KB?
Choose the photo, pick the size from Maximum file size (100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB, 1.5 MB, 2 MB) or type your own under Custom, and download. The tool finds the highest JPEG quality that fits under that size.
Why can my photo not get under the size I picked?
Below about quality 50 a photo starts to look smeared, so the tool stops there. If it is still too big, the photo has too many pixels for that size. The tool works out a smaller width and height that fits and offers it as one button.
Does compressing reduce quality?
A little. JPEG saves space by dropping detail the eye notices least. Down to about quality 75 the loss is usually hard to see on a phone screen; below that, fine patterns such as zari and embroidery start to blur first.
Is 1 KB 1,000 bytes or 1,024?
Both are used. The tool counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, the stricter of the two, so a file it makes under 100 KB is also under 100 KB on a site that counts 1,024.
Can I compress a PNG?
Yes, but it is saved as JPEG. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so it cannot be squeezed to a chosen size. For photos, JPEG is also far smaller.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The compressor runs in your browser on your phone or computer. Nothing is sent to SareeViz or anyone else.
