Change the DPI of an image (DPI converter)

Set a JPEG or PNG to 72, 150, 300 or any DPI and download it. If DPI is all you change, the pixels stay exactly as they were. Free, no login, and your photo stays on your device.

Your photo stays on your phone or computer. Nothing is uploaded.

DPI

DPI is only a label for printing. It does not change the pixels or make the photo sharper.

Size

The pixels stay as they are. Use this to only shrink the file or change the DPI.

Maximum file size

The photo is saved at high quality, whatever size that comes to.

Save as

JPEG is what Myntra, Flipkart, Amazon and Meesho ask for, and the smallest file for a photo.

Your new photo will show here.

What DPI actually is

A digital photo is a grid of pixels, say 3000 x 4000. DPI (dots per inch) is a number stored inside the file that tells a printer how tightly to pack those pixels on paper.

Change the DPI and you change only that number. The grid is the same, the file looks the same on every screen, and nothing gets sharper. What changes is the size the photo prints at.

The same photo at different DPI

A 3000 x 4000 phone photo, with nothing changed but the label:

DPI labelPrints at (inches)Prints at (cm)
72 dpi41.7 x 55.6105.8 x 141.1
150 dpi20.0 x 26.750.8 x 67.7
300 dpi10.0 x 13.325.4 x 33.9

At 72 dpi it would print as a poster, but the pixels are spread thin and it looks soft from close up. At 300 dpi the same pixels make a smaller, crisp print. That is why printers ask for 300.

When someone asks you for 300 DPI

A printer asking for 300 DPI really wants enough pixels for the print size. Work it out as inches times 300. For an A4 page that is 2481 x 3507 pixels; for a 6 x 4 inch photo, 1800 x 1200.

If your photo already has those pixels, set the label to 300 here and you are done. If it is smaller, relabelling will not help: you need a bigger original, not a different number.

Of the marketplace rules we track, only Myntra’s mention DPI: 72 dpi or more, next to its pixel minimum, so any label passes there. Its other photo rules are in our Myntra image guide.

Online, DPI does not matter. Marketplaces and websites look at pixels and file size, which the product image resizer sets for Myntra, Flipkart, Amazon and Meesho.

What each marketplace asks for, size and file type included, is in our marketplace image guide.

How to change the DPI of a photo

  1. 1

    Choose your photo

A JPEG or PNG keeps its pixels untouched. A WebP is saved as JPEG or PNG, since WebP has no DPI label.

  2. 2

    Pick the DPI

    72, 150 or 300, or type your own from 1 to 2400.

  3. 3

Leave the size as it is

With Keep original size and the same format, only the label is rewritten. The tool says so under the result.

  4. 4

    Download

The before and after table shows the new DPI. Tap Download.

Changing the size or setting a file size limit at the same time is fine too, but then the photo is re-saved and the pixels do change. If the file is too heavy to email to the printer, the image compressor brings it down.

Questions about DPI

Does changing DPI change the image quality?

No. DPI is a label inside the file that tells a printer how many pixels to fit in one inch. The pixels stay exactly the same, so the photo looks the same on a screen and is no sharper. Only the printed size changes.

How do I convert an image to 300 DPI?

Choose the photo, pick 300 dpi, and download. If you change nothing else, the tool only rewrites the label, and the downloaded file has the same pixels as your original.

What DPI do Myntra, Flipkart and Amazon need?

Marketplaces care about pixels, not DPI. Myntra's rules say 72 dpi or more, alongside a minimum of 1080 x 1440 pixels, so any DPI label passes once the pixels are right. Flipkart and Amazon set pixel sizes only.

What is the difference between 72 DPI and 300 DPI?

Only the printed size. A 1080 x 1440 photo labelled 72 dpi prints 15.0 x 20.0 inches; labelled 300 dpi, the same pixels print 3.6 x 4.8 inches and look sharper on paper. On a screen they are identical.

How many pixels do I need to print A4 at 300 DPI?

2481 x 3507 pixels. At 150 dpi, which is fine for a poster seen from a step away, it is 1241 x 1754.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The DPI converter works inside your browser. Nothing is sent to SareeViz or anywhere else.
